GrOK AI by Musk: The xAI Large Language Model 238

Musk's AI startup xAI is about to launch a chat bot called Grok, which has "a bit of intelligence" and a "rebellious streak."

What is Grok?

Grok is a term coined by Robert A. Heinlein in his 1961 science fiction novel "Stranger in a Strange Land." In this book, "Grok" is a Martian term with no direct Earth translation. Later, Merriam-Webster simply defined it as a transitive verb meaning "to understand thoroughly."

For the first product of his artificial intelligence company xAI, the chatbot currently being tested by a "specific group" has been named Grok. Once testing is complete, it will be made available to Premium+ subscribers on the X platform.

Unlike other common GPT-style large models, Grok AI features unique capabilities and personality, along with impressive real-time knowledge acquisition abilities.

One of Grok AI's signature capabilities is its real-time information retrieval ability. It can extract the latest knowledge from social media platforms such as Twitter, such as Musk's recent interview transcripts. This makes Grok a powerful information source that can provide up-to-date information, satisfying users' knowledge needs while keeping it competitive.

In addition to real-time information retrieval, Grok AI is also highly versatile. It can conduct multiple conversations simultaneously, allowing users to write code while asking other questions. If users are not satisfied with the response, they can regenerate the answer or even use the built-in markdown editor to manually modify the AI's response. This versatility makes Grok a multi-talented AI assistant capable of meeting a wide range of needs.

xAI has posted comparison data on its official website between Grok AI and other models across multiple tests. The company claims that comparing the current Grok-1 version, only "models like GPT-4, which were trained with massive amounts of training data and computational resources," can surpass it. xAI is quite confident in Grok's training efficiency, and Musk previously said that this product "is the best in some important respects," which may refer to this point as well as its deep integration with the X platform.

For Musk, another advantage of Grok AI lies in the strength of the enterprises he owns. It can integrate the products and services of xAI, Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter with one another. Therefore, launching the test on X Premium Plus first is one of its biggest advantages. Once the test proves successful, it could even be applied to Tesla's electric vehicles and even SpaceX. This is an advantage that many generative AI companies do not have.

X users can now apply to try Grok. In the future, users subscribed to X's "Premium+" service will be able to continue using it for $16 per month.
