Hugo: An Open-Source Static Site Generator Written in GoIntroduction
What is Hugo?
Hugo is a static site generator built with the Go language. It's fast and highly flexible. Through its template system and rapid asset processing pipeline, Hugo can render a complete website within seconds. Hugo can generate various types of websites, such as corporate, government, nonprofit, education, news, event, and project sites, documentation sites, image portfolios, landing pages, business, professional, and personal blogs, resumes, and more.

Main Features of Hugo
Rapid Asset Processing Pipeline
Image processing: operations such as conversion, resizing, cropping, rotation, color adjustment, applying filters, overlaying text and images, and extracting EXIF data.
JavaScript bundling: transpiles TypeScript and JSX into JavaScript, performs bundling, tree shaking, minification, creates source maps, and executes SRI hashing.
Sass processing: transpiles Sass into CSS, performs bundling, tree shaking, minification, creates source maps, executes SRI hashing, and integrates with PostCSS.
Tailwind CSS processing: compiles Tailwind CSS utility classes into standard CSS, performs bundling, tree shaking, optimization, minification, executes SRI hashing, and integrates with PostCSS.
Flexible Framework
Hugo offers multilingual support and a powerful taxonomy system, and is widely used to create documentation sites, landing pages, and corporate, government, nonprofit, education, news, event, and project sites.
Embedded Web Server
Using Hugo's embedded web server during development lets you instantly see changes to content, structure, behavior, and presentation.
Hugo Modules
You can share content, assets, data, translations, themes, templates, and configuration with other projects via public or private Git repositories.
Hugo Versions
Hugo comes in three versions: Standard, Extended, and Extended/Deploy. The Extended and Extended/Deploy versions provide advanced features such as encoding images into WebP format and using embedded LibSass to transpile Sass into CSS. The Extended/Deploy version additionally supports directly deploying the website to a Google Cloud Storage bucket, AWS S3 bucket, or Azure Storage container.
How to Use Hugo?
1. Create a New Site
Open a terminal and run the following command to create a new Hugo site:
hugo new site mynewsite cd mynewsite
2. Add a Theme
You can choose a theme from the Hugo theme library and add it to your site. Taking the hyde theme as an example, use the Hugo module system to import the theme:
# Initialize the Hugo module system hugo mod init github.com/<your_user>/<your_project> # Import the theme in the Hugo config file # Edit the hugo.toml or hugo.yaml file and add the following [module] [[module.imports]] path = "github.com/spf13/hyde"
3. Create Content
Use the following command to create a new article:
hugo new posts/my-first-post.md
Then edit the generated Markdown file content/posts/my-first-post.md and add your article content.
4. Develop and Preview
During development, you can use Hugo's embedded web server to instantly see changes to content, structure, behavior, and presentation. Run the following command to start the server:
hugo server -D
The -D option means draft articles will be included. Open your browser and visit http://localhost:1313 to see your site.
