DoNotPay: AI Lawyer App
DoNotPay: AI Lawyer AppIntroduction
DoNotPay is an app that uses AI technology to provide legal services to ordinary people. The company was founded by Joshua Browder in 2015 and has raised nearly $28 million to date. Its most recent funding round took place in 2021, led by A16Z, raising a total of $10 million and valuing the company at $210 million.
Initially, the app only offered an automated function for writing appeals after receiving a parking ticket. Over the years, it has expanded its services to cover personal taxes, credit score maintenance, subscription refunds, and various other matters.
Advances in language models and updates to large models have also brought more upgrades to DoNotPay's chat bot. It is now able to act as a consumer's representative, negotiating issues in internet service plans through chat windows to争取 refunds. Refunds of $10 or $15 may not be much, but the upside is that they save time and effort while advocating for consumers' rights. Although the "AI lawyer" has been barred from the courtroom, it will increasingly help ordinary people in a broader range of everyday scenarios.
This latest attempt by the AI lawyer to enter the courtroom also signals that technology has developed to the point where it begins to conflict with the existing legal system. In the legal field, AI has been used as a lawyer's tool for some time, and recently judges have even begun using AIGC to optimize their rulings.
However, when AI begins to provide legal services for ordinary people and attempts to enter the initial stages of courtroom proceedings, it appears to face more resistance, and has even sparked discussion about the compliance of AI legal services. Today's courtroom rules and regulatory systems are no longer sufficient to keep pace with rapid technological advances.
