Wayback Machine: Free Web Archive & Page History Lookup
Wayback Machine: Free Web Archive & Page History LookupIntroduction
Wayback Machine is the best-known service of the Internet Archive, a free tool for web page historical archiving and lookup. The Internet Archive, founded in 1996, is a non-profit online library containing millions of free books, videos, software, music, and websites. Wayback Machine can preserve web page content from different points in time, allowing users to view past snapshots even if the original page has been deleted or modified. It is currently the world's largest web page historical database, processing over 1 billion access and archive requests daily, with more than 689 billion web page snapshots saved.

Features
Save web pages: Users can submit URLs for archiving. After registering for a free account, they can also request crawls of external links on a page and receive crawl reports. Wayback Machine offers browser extensions for Safari, Firefox, and Chrome, as well as iOS and Android apps, making it convenient for users to save web pages at any time. If you have both an Internet Archive account and a Google account, you can use the bulk save feature: enter URLs in column A of a Google Sheet, and the system will automatically display archive status and links in columns B and D, sending email notifications when processing begins and ends.
View archived versions: After entering a URL, the system displays a "year selector" and a "date selector" listing all archived records. Users can choose a year and a specific date to view page snapshots. Dates with archives are marked with circles in the calendar; the larger the circle, the more archives exist on that date. Different colors represent different statuses: blue indicates a normal archive, green indicates a redirect, orange indicates a broken link, and red indicates a server error. Hovering over a specific date shows multiple archive records for that day (accurate to the hour, minute, and second), and clicking allows access.
Compare archived versions: Using the "Compare Changes" feature, enter an archived URL, select two time points, and view page changes side by side. The system highlights content changes in different colors: yellow indicates deleted content, and blue indicates added content.
Understand information context: Archived pages sometimes include background notes to help users understand the content. For example, when a page has been deleted or cited by well-known organizations, relevant explanations or contextual information is provided.
How to Use Wayback Machine
There are two main search methods: searching directly via the web page URL (URL), and searching by keywords. In practice, URL search is more common. Each archive generates a 16-digit timestamp recording the specific year, month, day, hour, minute, and second. Links within archived pages default to other archived pages on Wayback Machine rather than the original web pages.
Wayback Machine Applications
Browser Extensions
Supports browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. Once installed, users can save the current page with one click, view page history, open the earliest snapshot, and more. The extension can also automatically detect 404 errors and attempt to restore pages through archives. Taking Chrome as an example, users can install the extension through the Extension Manager. After installation, they can view the last archive time of a page and use related features.
Mobile Apps
iOS and Android apps are available for convenient use on mobile devices.
