DeviantArt – Online Art Community & Social Platform 89

DeviantArt (abbreviated as DA) is an online community where art enthusiasts share and socialize through their work, used for online showcasing, promotion, and sale of creative pieces. It was founded by Angelo Sotira and Scott Jarkoff in 2000.

DeviantArt provides a convenient sharing platform for both professional artists and amateurs, allowing them to publish their artwork, gain exposure, receive feedback, and collaborate on projects. DeviantArt is more than just a platform for displaying work; it has built a vibrant community that supports various art forms, from digital art to traditional painting, as well as photography, pixel art, and more.

With over 48 million registered members and a vast art collection spanning various media (such as digital art, traditional art, literature, and photography), DeviantArt has become a paradise for artists worldwide.

How to Make Money on DeviantArt?

• Selling Prints and Merchandise: DeviantArt provides artists with a platform to sell their artwork in the form of prints, custom items, or merchandise. Artists can set up their own online shops on DeviantArt, allowing fans and collectors to purchase their creations.

• Commissioned and Custom Works: Artists on DeviantArt can offer commissioned works to clients, which not only showcases the artist's skills but also realizes the patron's artistic vision while earning a reasonable income.

• Premium Membership: By upgrading to a Core Membership, artists can gain more exposure opportunities, use advanced tools, and enjoy ad-free browsing. For example, artists can also receive financial support through the "Commission Widget" feature, allowing their audience and fans to directly donate or pay for commissioned work.

• Participating in Contests and Challenges: DeviantArt hosts various contests and challenges, providing artists with opportunities to win cash prizes. Participating in these events not only brings financial rewards but also attracts more attention and expands artistic influence.

• Collaborations and Freelance Opportunities: DeviantArt is an excellent platform for artists to build connections and collaborate with other creative individuals. By networking and showcasing their professional skills, artists can attract freelance opportunities such as commissioned projects, illustration work, or design work.

In its early days, DeviantArt's development was closely related to DMusic Network, LLC, and later went through a series of corporate acquisitions, such as being acquired by Lynx Technology Group. During this period, it also involved the influence of Michael Ovitz, the former president of The Walt Disney Company, who indirectly became DeviantArt's third co-founder and played a key role when DA faced early difficulties.

The founding of DeviantArt was not achieved overnight, but rather built upon a series of continuous innovations, such as the early DMusic and Customize.org—the latter being the first skin panel website, providing skin downloads for software like Winamp. This laid the technical foundation and community management experience for the creation of DeviantArt.

Over time, DeviantArt has become an important place for artists and art enthusiasts to find inspiration, share work, learn techniques, and build connections. It has attracted artists of various styles, including newcomers, mid-to-high-level artists, and even top-tier artists. Its community characteristics give it broad influence across multiple fields, including adult comics, Japanese and Korean-style anime, and independent art.

For those who want to engage with artists at different levels, DeviantArt is a treasure trove of a website, especially for users who enjoy exploring non-mainstream or independent art styles. Together with other art platforms such as Artstation and Pixiv, it forms an ecosystem for artists to showcase and communicate online, but DeviantArt is known for its inclusiveness and diversity, supporting everything from the most basic creations to the most complex digital artwork.
