RTranslator: Real-Time Translation App for Android 194

RTranslator is an (almost) open-source, free, offline Android real-time translation app. Connect with someone who has the app, connect a Bluetooth headset, put your phone in your pocket, and you can have a conversation as if the other person spoke your language.

RTranslator Conversation Mode

• Conversation Mode is RTranslator's main feature. In this mode, you can connect with another phone that uses this app. If the user accepts your connection request:

• When you speak, your phone (or Bluetooth headset, if connected) will capture the audio.

• The captured audio will be converted to text and sent to your conversation partner's phone.

• Your conversation partner's phone will translate the received text into his language.

• Your conversation partner's phone will convert the translated text to audio and reproduce it from the speaker (or through your conversation partner's Bluetooth headset, if connected to his phone).

• All of this happens in both directions.

• Each user can have multiple phones connected, so you can translate conversations between more than two people and in any combination.

RTranslator Walkie-Talkie Mode

If Conversation Mode is designed for long conversations with someone, this mode is designed for quick conversations, such as asking for information on the street or talking to a shop clerk.

This mode can only translate conversations between two people, does not work with a Bluetooth headset, and requires taking turns to speak. It is not true simultaneous translation, but it works on only one phone.

In this mode, the smartphone microphone will listen in both languages simultaneously (selectable on the same screen in Walkie-Talkie mode).

The app will detect which language the conversation partner is using, translate the audio into the other language, convert the text to audio, and then reproduce it from the phone's speaker. When TTS ends, it will automatically resume listening.

RTranslator Text Translation Mode

This mode is simply a classic text translator, but it always comes in handy.

General Mode

RTranslator uses Meta's NLLB for translation and Openai's Whisper for speech recognition. Both are (almost) open-source and state-of-the-art AI, offering excellent quality and running directly on the phone, ensuring absolute privacy. RTranslator can even be used offline without any loss of quality.

Additionally, RTranslator can even run in the background, when the phone is in standby, or when using other apps (only when you use Conversation or Walkie-Talkie mode). However, some phones will restrict background power usage, so in this case, it is best to avoid this and keep the app open with the screen on.
