MarkItDown: A Handy AI Tool for Converting Files and Office Documents to Markdown!
What is MarkItDown?
MarkItDown is an open-source tool supported by Microsoft that can convert various file formats (such as PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, images, audio, web pages, etc.) into Markdown format. It is also specifically optimized for LLM applications, making the output not only suitable for human reading, but also an ideal input format for LLMs.

MarkItDown Features
Multi-format support: Supports converting PDF, Word, Excel, ppt, images (including OCR recognition), audio (speech-to-text), HTML, web pages (such as YouTube links) and other formats into structured Markdown. It also preserves core content such as heading hierarchy and table structure, making it suitable for ai comprehension and analysis.
MCP protocol integration: As an MCP server, it allows AI tools (such as Claude Desktop) to invoke file conversion capabilities through standard protocols, enabling "voice command to file processing" without the need for programming. For example, when a user says "convert this PDF to Markdown," the AI can automatically invoke MarkItDown to complete the conversion.
MarkItDown Use Cases
Academic research: Quickly convert papers and literature into Markdown for easy text analysis.
Office automation: Convert meeting recordings, PPTs, etc. into structured notes.
AI workflow: Combined with LLMs, achieve full-link automation of "voice command → file processing → content summarization."
How to Install and Use MarkItDown?
1. Installation and Startup
Command-line mode:
pip install markitdown-mcp markitdown-mcp # Start STDIO mode markitdown-mcp --sse --host 127.0.0.1 --port 3001 # Start SSE service[2,4,5](@ref)
Docker deployment:
docker build -t markitdown-mcp:latest . docker run -it --rm markitdown-mcp:latest # Default STDIO mode docker run -it --rm -v /local-directory:/workdir markitdown-mcp:latest # Mount local files[4,5](@ref)
2. Configuration with Claude Desktop
Add the following configuration to claude_desktop_config.json to enable the MarkItDown MCP service:
{
"mcpServers": {
"markitdown": {
"command": "docker",
"args": ["run", "--rm", "-i", "-v", "/local-directory:/workdir", "markitdown-mcp:latest"]
}
}
}After configuration, Claude can directly call the file conversion feature.
3. Python API Invocation
from markitdown import MarkItDown
md = MarkItDown(enable_plugins=True)
result = md.convert("input.pdf") # Convert to Markdown text
print(result.text_content)Supports integrating LLM models (such as GPT-4o) through the llm_client parameter to optimize output.
