Why Did ByteDance Launch Trae When It Already Has Doubao MarsCode?
ByteDance recently launched a highly anticipated AI programming tool: Trae. Previously, ByteDance already had MarsCode, along with the Doubao AI Programming tool. So ByteDance now has three AI programming tools. Since MarsCode and the Doubao AI Programming tool already exist, why launch Trae? Below, I'd like to share my own views.

Technical Philosophy
MarsCode is a plugin-style AI programming assistant that can be integrated into existing development environments, making it suitable for developers accustomed to their original workflows. Trae, on the other hand, is a standalone IDE (Integrated Development Environment) with AI capabilities deeply integrated from the ground up, delivering a smoother development experience and handling complex projects with greater ease.
Features and Performance Differences
As a standalone IDE, Trae has strong contextual awareness and a better understanding of project code, resulting in more precise code completion and bug fixing. By contrast, since MarsCode is a plugin, its features are easily limited by the existing development environment. In addition, Trae supports multiple high-performance models and allows flexible model switching, enabling developers to choose based on actual needs.
User Experience and Efficiency Improvements
Trae is committed to delivering an integrated development experience for developers, supporting the entire workflow from raising a question to generating complete code—a capability that's harder for MarsCode to achieve. Trae also offers innovative features such as one-click apply, version rollback, conversational development, and real-time preview, significantly boosting development efficiency and user experience.
Market and Strategic Considerations
The launch of Trae signals ByteDance's intent to further expand its presence in the global programming tools market. Leveraging the advantages of a standalone IDE, ByteDance can compete more effectively on a global scale. Trae's overseas and domestic editions are optimized for different markets, meeting the diverse needs of developers worldwide.
Long-Term Development Plans
The launch of Trae is not meant to replace MarsCode but to give developers more options. MarsCode will continue to exist as a plugin, suitable for developers who want to integrate new features into their existing environment, while Trae is better suited for users who want to try a new development environment. In future development, Trae will add features such as model customization and more powerful multimodal support to strengthen its market competitiveness.

From another perspective, without developing something new and only making tweaks to MarsCode, ByteDance would inevitably be constrained by its limitations. Therefore, ByteDance's launch of Trae is not only aimed at meeting developers' demand for efficient and intelligent development tools, but also at completing its strategic layout in the programming tools field, serving different development scenarios and needs.
