Sanctuary AI, a company dedicated to creating the world's first human-like intelligence in general-purpose robots, has announced the launch of its sixth-generation general-purpose robot named Phoenix, marking a significant step forward. Phoenix is the world's first humanoid general-purpose robot powered by Carbon, Carbon™ being a pioneering and unique AI control system designed to endow Phoenix with human-like intelligence and enable it to perform a wide range of jobs to help address the labor challenges affecting the workforce today. Sanctuary has already demonstrated that its technology is capable of completing hundreds of tasks identified by customers from a dozen different industries.

Geordie Rose, co-founder and CEO of Sanctuary AI, stated: "We designed Phoenix to be the most richly sensored and physically capable humanoid robot ever built, and to enable Carbon's quickly growing intelligence to perform the broadest set of work tasks. We see a future where general-purpose robots are as ubiquitous as automobiles, helping people do the work that needs to be done in situations where there simply aren't enough people to do it."

Phoenix Features:

  • Human-like form and function: 170 cm tall, weighing 70.3 kg

  • Maximum payload of 25 kg

  • Top speed of 4.8 km/h

  • Industry-leading robotic hands with a higher degree of freedom (a total of 20), comparable to the dexterity of a human hand, enabling it to manipulate objects with flexibility. It also performs fine operations through proprietary haptic technology that mimics the sense of touch.

  • Enhanced aesthetics with a bolder color palette and higher texture.

Carbon Features:

  • A cognitive architecture and software platform for humanoid general-purpose robots

  • Integrates modern artificial intelligence technology, transforming natural language into real-world actions

  • Enables Phoenix to think and act like a human to complete tasks

  • Explainable and auditable reasoning, task, and motion planning

  • Combines symbolic and logical reasoning with modern LLMs (for general knowledge), integrated and extended with domain-specific capabilities

  • Agency and goal-seeking behavior

  • Uses deep learning and reinforcement learning

  • Realistic and physically accurate world simulations for robot training

  • Human-robot interaction monitoring, teleoperation, and fleet management

What sets Sanctuary AI apart from other companies in the industry is its literal interpretation of "general purpose" and its emphasis on creating technology that can perform physical labor like a human. "To be a general-purpose robot, a robot needs to be able to complete almost any work task in a work environment, just as you would expect a person to do," Rose said. "While it's easy to focus on the physical aspects of the robot, our view is that the robot is just the tool for the real star of the show, which is our proprietary AI control system, the carbon-based mind of the robot."
