In this year's Octoverse report, we examine how open source activity around ai, cloud, and Git is transforming the developer experience.

- In 2023, more developers have begun using AI technologies, and are also attempting to build AI-based applications.

- The number of generative AI projects based on foundation models from companies such as OpenAI has surged, with some of these projects even breaking into the top 10 most popular open source projects.

- Approximately 92% of developers are using or experimenting with AI coding tools.

- 93% of developers use Git to build and deploy software.

- In 2023, the number of projects on the GitHub platform reached 420 million, growing 27%; the number of public repositories reached 284 million, growing 22%; the number of public generative AI projects soared to 65,000, growing 248%; and the total number of contributions to all projects throughout the year reached 4.5 billion.

- The number of private projects on GitHub grew by 38%, accounting for more than 80% of all activity on GitHub.

- Developers are increasingly using Git infrastructure-as-code (IaC) workflows, standardized cloud deployments, as well as Dockerfiles, containers, and other cloud-native technologies.

- JavaScript is once again the most popular programming language, with Shell and Hashicorp Configuration Language (HCL) also showing a growing trend. TypeScript has surpassed Java to become the third most popular language.

- Open source AI innovation is diverse, with top AI projects owned by individual developers. An analysis of the top 20 open source generative AI projects on GitHub found that some of the top projects are personally owned.

- By 2030, the productivity gains developers are expected to reap from generative AI are projected to contribute $1.5 trillion to the global economy and add 15 million "effective developers" worldwide.

- Generative AI is driving a substantial global increase in individual contributors to generative AI projects, growing 148% year over year, with the total number of generative AI projects also growing 248% year over year.

- The number of developer accounts on GitHub grew by nearly 26%, exceeding 100 million in total.

- The United States remains the largest developer community globally, with more than 20.2 million developers and an annual growth rate of 21%.

- Developer communities in Asia-Pacific, Africa, South America, and Europe are growing rapidly. India in particular added 3.5 million new developers in 2023, an annual growth rate of 36%. Singapore had the highest developer growth rate in the Asia-Pacific region at 39%.

- Based on the current growth rate, India is projected to surpass the United States by 2027 to become the largest developer community on GitHub.
